MRP Moisture Resistant Primer

description

Shaw MRP is a specifically formulated, water-based 2-part barrier primer, with excellent adhesion to both old and green concrete, smooth or profiled surfaces.  Shaw MRP is designed to be used as a barrier primer over concrete, old cutback adhesive, asphalt based products, VCT tile, wood flooring or other solid surfaces.

Shaw MRP can be applied over chemically abated subfloors.  NOTE:  First, an additional cleaning with Surface Prep EXT is required, apply, agitate, remove prior to applying Shaw MRP.

Shaw MRP provides moisture protection and can reduce commercial floor preparation, delivering a stable and protective isolation from existing subfloor problems.

APPROVED SUBSTRATES

  • For interior use only.  Sound and properly prepared concrete (on, above or below grade), metal, wood, fiberglass and terrazzo.
  • When using to address moisture issues, the Concrete Surface Profile must be at least a 2-3 to ensure penetration into the surface of the substrate.
  • Recommended to use after the substrate has been properly prepared using Shaw Surface Prep EXT for maximum porosity.
  • Existing resilient products should be over 1 year old, secure and fully adhered with a full spread of adhesive.  Remove all waxes and polishes from the existing floor before installation.

SUBSTRATE
TESTING

  • Shaw MRP is warranted for site conditions up to the following levels:
  • RH > 99% (ASTM F-2170), provided the site is absent of hydrostatic pressure.
  • CaCl / MVER - 14 lbs (ASTM F-1869)
  • 14 pH – (ASTM F710).

SITE CONDITIONS AND PREPARaTION

  • Shaw MRP can be installed on smooth or profiled concrete surfaces.
  • To improve adhesion over smooth concrete, the surface must be scarified using a 60-80 grit sandpaper or similar abrasive means.
  • Optimal adhesion results can be obtained by applying Shaw Surface Prep EXT to obtain a Concrete Surface Profile of 2-3.
  • Shaw MRP can be applied to new concrete approximately 24 hours after the slab has been poured.  If MRP is being applied over a curing agent or sealer, bond testing must be performed to ensure compatibility.

substrate preparation

  • Substrate must be structurally sound, clean, level and dry.
  • Substrate must be free of dust, dirt, oil, grease, paint, curing agents, concrete sealers, adhesives, loosely bonded toppings, loose particles and any other substance or condition that may prevent or reduce adhesion.
  • Fill depressions or cracks with a cementitious patching / leveling compound that meet or exceed Shaw Industries maximum moisture level and pH requirements. Use of gypsum-based patching and/or leveling compounds which contain Portland or high alumina cement and meet or exceed the compressive strength of 3,000 psi are acceptable.
  • For cracks or saw cuts deeper than 1", follow the preparation and application instructions for Shaw QuikFill. QuikFill is a 2part urethane treatment that prevents future damage from moisture penetrating to the surface of the slab that may damage or breakdown adhesives or unapproved patching compounds
  • Installation site temperatures must be between 42-90OF (5.5-32.2OC) and the ambient relative humidity between 30-65%.

spread rates

  • Coverage rate is approximately 150 square feet per gallon.
  • New or less porous concrete may absorb less.
  • Do not allow Shaw MRP to freeze.

mixing insructions

  • Pre-mix Part B to integrate fillers that may have settled to the bottom.  Best results are achieved with a plastic paint mixer that will loosen the sediment from the bottom of the pail.  Once the sediment is loosened from the bottom, a high speed hand drill can be used that will allow the integration of the fillers into the liquids.
  • Once B is mixed, slowly add Part A into Part B, and continue mixing with the same drill and mixer.
  • Mix for 2 minutes.  Ensure that A and B have completely integrated.

application insTructions

  • After mixing, distribute the liquid in a ribbon over the designated area.
  • Use a 9” or 18” nap roller (1/4” - 3/8”) for the best results.
  • Shaw MRP must be applied in a consistent film at a rate of 150 sq ft per gallon.
  • Work material in all voids and pinholes to ensure mitigation performance.
  • If a second application is necessary, allow Shaw MRP to cure to a tack free surface before applying.
  • Once rolled, Shaw MRP will cure within 4-6 hours.

clean up

  • Clean all tools and equipment with a scouring pad and warm soapy water.  If the product is allowed to set, then mechanical cleaning or the application of a suitable paint stripper may be required.
  • Follow all local regulations for disposal.

Safety

  • Use in well ventilated areas, do not ingest, swallow or inhale.
  • Protective gear should be used, gloves and glasses.
  • If used in confined spaces, use a painter’s mask.
  • For skin and eye contact, flush with water.
