SCULPTURED RESILIENT WALL BASE

Installation and Maintenance Instructions

NOTICE TO INSTALLER

Our warranty will become effective only if these instructions are followed in every respect.

Please note: In all cases, installations should comply with procedures outlined in ASTM Standards for installation, at a minimum where "Better Than" ASTM standards are recommended, please refer to instructions below.

Read the complete instructions before beginning the installation.

General

Wall surface must be thoroughly dry, smooth, and free from dirt, wallpaper, vinyl waII covering, grease, old adhesives, and other extraneous material. DO NOT apply directly over outside walls in contact with earth (such as unfurred basement walls) or over ceramic tile, metals, or other impervious surfaces because poor adhesion may result. Maintain base, adhesive, and room air at a uniform temperature of at least 70°F and Relative Humidity range of 30-60% for 24 hours prior to, during, and for 48 hours after installation. The manufacturer cannot accept any responsibility for poor results resulting from working conditions and/or workmanship outside our control. A quality installation is the responsibility of the installer. Use Shaw Cove Base adhesive carefully following the instructions.

INSTALLATION OF WALL BASE

Spread approved adhesive either to back of base or to wall using a triangular notched towel or cartridge gun. Trowel notches should be 3/32" deep by 3/32" wide with 3/32" flats. If applying adhesive with a cartridge gun use a 3-hole nozzle for 4" base. Apply adhesive at least 1.4" from top of base if using a trowel and 1" from top of base if using a cartridge so that adhesive does not seep out as base is rolled. Install base within 20 minutes of adhesive application.

Roll thoroughly with hand roller immediately after applying base. If roller is unavailable, wipe base with soft cloth, firmly pressing base against the wall. Base applied to curved or irregular surfaces may require bracing. If wall or floor surface is uneven, it may be necessary to trim edges before installing adjoining pieces of base. Use a razor-type utility knife, cutting base from face to back. Immediately remove excess adhesive from base or wall with water. Excess adhesive may leave a stain if not removed promptly. Avoid exposure of base to excessive heat, such as direct sunlight, until adhesive has completely set.

EQUIPMENT

  • Standard or sliding Compound Miter Saw, Radial Arm Saw, or Table Saw equipped with a Carbide or Diamond tip blade with 80 teeth or greater.
  • Straight Edge.
  • Tape measure.
  • Carpenter's square and protractor.

LDR WALL BASE INSTALLATION

  1. Cut the LDR Wall Base using a saw with the appropriate blade. Note: when butting seams together, it may be necessary to square cut the factory edge if butt ends do not align.
  2. Apply adhesive per above instructions.
  3. Position waII base on wall surface and roll as recommended above. Note: Always roll back to starting point to prevent stretching the wall base.
  4. Clean-up: Remove wet adhesive with a waterdampened cloth. If adhesive has dried, use a cloth dampened with mineral spirits.

CORNERS

Low Dirt Retention Resilient Wall Base Inside and Outside Corners are fabricated utilizing the same equipment and techniques required for traditional wood molding or baseboard profiles.

OUTSIDE CORNERS

  1. Position a sufficient length of wall base so that it tightly abuts the previous installed section and extends past the corner.
  2. Using a scribe or pencil, mark the wall corner bend location along the top edge of the wall base.
  3. Set the saw blade angle to the required miter angle for the corner using a protractor.
  4. Place the wall base section against the saw fence or miter guide so that the wall base is laying flat on the machine table with the surface facing up and perpendicular to the saw blade.
  5. Align the mark on the top edge of the wall base with the saw blade and cut the wall base to the proper miter angle. Repeat the procedure for the other side of the corner.
  6. Place the two mitered sections of the wall base on the corner and check for proper fit. Trim, if necessary, to obtain a tight fit at the corner.
  7. Apply the adhesive to the ribbed back of one section of the wall base, position the section in place, and roll with a hand roller to ensure proper adhesion to the wall surface.
  8. Repeat procedure #7 for the opposite side of the corner. Attention should be given to a tight and even fit to the corner.
Note: to obtain a tighter and more secure fit between the two mitered sections at the corner, glue the two mitered areas together with a compatible contact bond adhesive.

INSIDE CORNERS

  1. Set the saw blade angle to the required miter angle for the corner using a protractor.
  2. Place the wall base section against the saw fence or miter guide so the wall base is laying flat on the machine table with the contoured (show) surface facing up and perpendicular to the saw blade.
  3. Cut the wall base to the proper miter angle. Repeat the above procedure for the other side of the corner.
  4. Place the two mitered sections of the wall base on the inside corner and check for proper fit. Trim, if necessary, to obtain a tight fit at the corner.
  5. Apply the adhesive to the ribbed back of one section of the wall base corner, position the section in place, and roll with a hand roller to ensure proper adhesion to the wall surface.
  6. Repeat procedure #5 for the opposite side of the corner. Attention should be given to a tight and even fit to the corner.
Note: to obtain a tighter and more secure fit between the two mitered sections at the corner, glue the two mitered areas together using a compatible contact bond adhesive.

PAINTABLE LOW DIRT RETENTION WALL BASE

Low Dirt Retention WaII Base can be painted. Per the paint supplier's instructions, properly clean the surface of the wall base before painting. After cleaning, apply Sherwin Williams "adhesive" primer BSIW8050, or equivalent. Then, per the paint supplier's instructions use a quality brand latex paint, such as Sherwin Williams, or equivalent.

INITIAL MAINTENANCE

Wipe off any excess amounts of adhesive that may have come through the seams with a damp cloth. Allow the adhesive on the wall base to thoroughly dry before completing the following initial maintenance procedure.

  • Wall Base and Accessories are maintained by hand.
  • Wash with a wet cloth or wet mop using neutral cleaner per directions.
  • Rinse with clear water.
  • Clean wall base and accessories as conditions and soiling dictates.

Low Dirt Retention Resilient WaII Base is maintained with regular wiping with a soft, wet cloth. A mild soap or neutral Ph cleaner may be added to the water. Coarse scrubbing media or harsh cleaning chemicals may damage the surface of the wall base.
